Articles & Bibliography
The Heart of Addiction by Lance Dodes:
An insightful exploration of the similarities of addiction with other compulsions. This book is quite readable and worthwhile for anyone suffering from chemical overuse. In my opinion he does not give enough credit to Alcoholics Anonymous & 12 step programs for the positive effect they have for many individuals.
Under The Influence by Milam & Ketcham:
The classic book that lays out the disease model of chemical dependence, dated but still pertinent to anyone struggling with addiction.
Co-dependent No More by Melodie Beattie:
One of the classic books that defined co-dependency. This book is inclusive and may cast too wide a net in defining co-dependency; nevertheless it has been useful to many struggling with boundaries inside of a relationship.
The Dance of Anger by Harriet Learner:
One of the most insightful books I have read on anger, reads like a novel.
The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller:
A Swiss psychoanalyst talks about childhood and the unhealthy patterns & beliefs well intentioned parents pass along to their children. I will often recommend this book to anyone in individual therapy working on family of origin patterns.
Hold Me Tight by Susan Johnson:
A Canadian researcher and marital therapist details 7 conversations couples need to have to develop greater compassion and a more satisfying relationship.
